THE NON FLUFF EMOTIONAL STUFF™
Self-awareness is the foundation of emotional intelligence. It’s about truly understanding yourself—your emotions, your triggers, and the way you naturally respond in different situations. Without awareness, we can’t grow, adapt, or manage our emotions in a healthy way. Think of it as shining a light on your inner world so you can see clearly, rather than stumbling around in the dark.
The good news? Self-awareness can be learned and strengthened. Like any muscle, it grows with practice. In this first part, let’s explore six practical techniques to begin building that powerful self-awareness.
Every emotion serves a purpose. Instead of labelling them as “good” or “bad,” pause and ask: What is this feeling trying to tell me?
Become your own observer. Notice how you feel in everyday moments—driving, brushing your teeth, or sitting in a meeting. Ask: How am I feeling right now? Curiosity helps uncover the deeper “why” behind your reactions.
Triggers are those buttons that spark strong reactions. They’re tied to unmet needs like safety, respect, or love. By identifying what sets you off, you can manage your response instead of being hijacked by emotion.
Our bodies often speak before our minds catch up. Stress can show up as headaches, stomach issues, or fatigue. Instead of just treating the physical symptoms, ask: What emotion is behind this?
Emotions live in the body. Sadness feels heavy, anger feels tense, happiness feels light, and anxiety creates jitters. Tuning in helps you catch emotions as they happen.
When stress or conflict hits, do you lash out (holler) or shut down (hide)? Recognising your default reaction gives you the chance to pause and choose a healthier response.
These six steps are your foundation for self-awareness. They’re simple but powerful ways to begin listening to yourself more deeply. Remember: awareness is the first step to growth.
