THE NON FLUFF EMOTIONAL STUFF™
Have you ever set a goal, only to find yourself procrastinating, losing motivation, or eventually giving up? If so, you’re not alone. Many people struggle with maintaining momentum toward their goals, and often, the missing piece is a clear and compelling reason behind the goal itself—our ‘why.’
Margie Warrel, a leader in human potential, uses a powerful analogy to describe the importance of purpose. She explains that diffused light has little impact, but when concentrated through a magnifying glass, it has the power to ignite paper. Focus that energy even more, like a laser beam, and it can cut through steel. Likewise, a strong and clear ‘why’ helps us focus our energy, giving us the determination to overcome obstacles and push forward, no matter the difficulties.
A major reason we struggle with motivation is a lack of clarity around why we are pursuing a goal in the first place. German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche famously said, “He who has a why can endure any how.” Without a deep, personal connection to our goals, we’re more likely to abandon them at the first sign of difficulty. When our goals are rooted in external validation—such as looking good in a certain outfit or receiving praise from others—our motivation tends to fizzle out. However, when our goals are driven by internal purpose, they become sustainable.
To uncover your true motivation, start by asking yourself a series of ‘why’ questions. Let’s take the example of weight loss:
Why do I want to lose weight?
Because I want to fit into my old jeans.
Why do I want to fit into those jeans?
Because I want to feel more confident.
Why do I want to feel more confident?
Because when I feel confident, I engage more with my partner and family.
By continuing to dig deeper, you uncover the true emotional connection to your goal. It’s not just about the jeans—it’s about confidence, relationships, energy, and overall well-being. These deeper connections create lasting motivation
Many people believe motivation comes from external sources—fear of failure or the promise of a reward. While these factors can push us forward in the short term, they rarely create lasting change. True motivation comes from within. When we understand our ‘why,’ we develop an internal drive that keeps us moving even when things get tough.
To start harnessing the power of your ‘why,’ take a few moments to reflect on your goals. Ask yourself:
What is my goal?
Why do I want to achieve this?
What deeper emotional or personal reason drives this goal?

Now, it’s your turn! Write down your why and use it as a guiding force to fuel your motivation. The stronger your why, the more unstoppable you become.
